Starting with Version 2013, QuickBooks came out with a new user interface. The navigation bar is on the left rather than at the top of the screen. I personally like the old version. Here is how you can change it back.

As you can see, it has the menus on the left side. This is an effort on Intuit’s part to modernize QuickBooks to be more like the newer versions of other applications, similar to Outlook. It’s not bad once you get used to it, but as a long time user of QuickBooks, I miss the old look and feel. Here’s how you can change it back.
Step 1. Click View > Top Icon Bar. This splits the left navigation bar on the left-hand side and puts the icons on the home screen.
Step 2. Click Edit > Preferences > Desktop View. Each user (if in a multi-user setup) will have the ability to switch to colored icons in the top icon bar and/or set the company file color scheme as shown below.
Step 3. Click View>Open Window List. This shows all open windows in a list so moving between them is just one click.
After these selections have been made, QuickBooks looks like it used to. Here is the result of these changes:
